How Do We Win A War on Drugs We Have Lost for 40+ Years? Prevention Through Education ( The Perils of Substance Abuse): The United States has approximately 5 percent of the world's population yet consumes over 60 percent of the world's illegal drugs, that doesn't include over-the-counter, prescription medications, alcohol, or designer drugs. DARE is a great introduction program, but where it fails is after the 16-hour course there is no continued education. I challenge your school to be among the first to continue educating your students on the perils of substance abuse. Have someone with the knowledge talk to students, build a rapor with them, show them the REAL affects of drug use, not some commericial that fries an egg and compares it to the human brain. I have spoken to kids across the country, many high risk kids in alternative schools, and what I am routinely told after the presentations is shocking, a large number of kids say, "If I would have know this sooner I would have never used anything!" Imagine saving one more child in every school from a life of addiction.

Social Status: From Hollywood entertainers like Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cory Monteith, to the Sports Entertainment industry with names like Mr. Perfect, Ravishing Rick Rude, Miss Elizabeth, to the NFL where one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, Brett Farve, fell victim to addictioin. Police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, lawyers no one is exempt. As human beings, we discriminate in a multitude of different ways but drug use is non-discriminatory. Addiction will take anyone's possessions, family, and eventually your life. You see, to drugs your age, race, color, and even your soical status mean nothing, It just doesn't care. It will take it ALL and leave you with NOTHING!

Understanding Addiction: The human body is an amazing creation but is also very delicate. Our body regulates itself in what iis called homestasis, I like to refer to it as balance. When the body is in harmony it is in balance. If we get a cold our body becomes out of balance so we go to the medicine cabinet to take a cold pill to put our body back into balance. Drug users on the other hand take drugs to purposely put their body out of balance because they like the way it feels or it has become their new normal Drug use rewires the brain affecting areas of mood, thoiught, association, judgement, and decision making. That leads to the question did drug use create the mental health issues or did mental health issues create drug use? These seminars will provide a dynamic and thought provoking demonstartion of how drugs work within the human body and recognizing the signs and symptoms of drug use. Knowledge is the power to save a life one person at a time. I hope you will join me in the fight to educate others on the perils of substance abuse.
